“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark” – Michelangelo
I suggest that in the realm of business and leadership, this piece of wisdom remains as relevant as ever.
Too often, businesses, just like individuals, underestimate their potential. Many settle for the familiar comfort zone of moderate goals, while untapped opportunities await just beyond the horizon.
While I accept a case for cautious conservatism; to have a budget contingency for ‘a rainy day’; and not get too carried away with those “Big Fat Hairy Goals” – I urge business owners to take some time out to re-assess goals over the short, medium, and longer term. Dig deeper into ‘the Why’.
By aiming (realistically) high, we not only stretch our capabilities. Done well, we empower our teams, nurture innovation, and inspire progress.
There may be nay-sayers out there in the face of rapidly changing times, and possible further Covid type challenges – but I will be interested in shared thoughts on the subject of goal setting. Please share your experience and expertise.
