The Best Team in Town - 5 Strategies to Attract, Motivate, and Retain a high performing team in your SME business.
As a former CEO I recall saying many times that I want “the best team in town” (I am also pleased to reflect that this came to fruition!).
I recognized that talent can be the make-or-break difference for a small and medium sized company and is an absolute critical part of the jigsaw.
However, attracting, motivating, and retaining the right talent requires an understanding of what modern employees seek and often expect beyond a pay-check. Here I summarize 5 ways to ensure your business stands out in the job market.
This is the start of a series, where over the next few weeks I intend to dig deeper into each area.
1. Cultivating Company Culture
A strong company culture is important to attract and retain candidates who share your company's values and vision. From the outset, showcase how inclusion, flexibility, and work-life integration are fundamental to your company ethos. Staff that resonate with a company's culture are likelier to stay committed and grow along with your business!
2. Offering Competitive Benefits
While you may struggle to compete with the salaries offered by larger companies, you can offer unique and competitive benefits. Flexible working hours, remote work opportunities, wellness programs, and personalized growth plans can be highly attractive to potential staff; and increasingly are on their wish (or even required) list.
3. Investing in Employee Development
Professional development opportunities demonstrate that you value your employees' growth. Providing training, mentor/buddy programs, and promoting from within can inspire staff and foster a sense of loyalty. So, encourage (indeed, insist) that your team members pursue their passions and skills. They may claim that “I’m too busy” – but this is not a good enough answer
4. Recognizing and Rewarding Talent
Feeling valued is a major driver of employee satisfaction. Let’s be honest - whether in or outside of the workplace, the vast majority of us like to be recognized! So, implement measurable ways to acknowledge achievements. Perhaps this is as easy as an Employee of the Month award, public recognition, or even share options in the company! By rewarding hard work, you not only motivate your workforce but also encourage a high-performance culture.
5. Promoting Work-Life Balance
Finally, recognizing the importance of work-life balance solidifies your image as an empathetic employer. Offering paid time off, mental health days, and family leave are services that can help retain workers who are looking for a supportive and understanding environment.
In an economy where there are shortages of skills in professions (for example, engineering) - by focusing on these five areas, SMEs can compete more effectively in the quest for talent; an indispensable asset that that will allow their businesses to flourish.
Hopefully the above provides useful food for thought. I urge you to take stock of your situation.
